I wish I was able to sleep in on this Sunday morning, but thanks to my cat Charlie, I woke up a little before 7:00 and couldn't fall back asleep. As I laid there trying to fall back asleep, my novel slipped into my mind. I finally wrote a crucial chapter last night, one I've been looking forward to for months. Now my characters are finally reaching the climax, and that has to be the best part of a novel to write! I'd had this part planned out for months, but that busy brain of mine threw an idea in there that had me unable to fall back asleep.
Basically, I'm debating if I want to change the motivation for one of the characters. He is the love interest, and let's just say he is one of my favorite fictional creations. So, part of me feels bad for betraying him, but I'm not really. He is still a good person at heart, I'm just going to reveal that he's not exactly who he said he was. I guess it would make the story more of a complicated love story than it has been so far. This is good to read about, right?
Still, I tried to fall back asleep for an hour, but it just wasn't happening. I had to get up and ponder further if I wanted to put this character diversion in motion. I've decided to give it a go. I figure if it doesn't work out, well, then that's what revisions are for.
Have you ever had an idea come to you that changes the course of your WIP? Did you incorporate it into your story, or did you let it pass?

Oh my gosh, congratulations for writing that chapter. I always feel happy when I do that. Keep up the great work.
ReplyDeleteYes I have I usually to incorperate it because if it suprises me it will really suprise the readers!
ReplyDeleteSorry you couldn't et any sleep but that was probably worth it.
Thanks, Morgan! It felt good to finally write it. And Swimmer, I'm with you. If it surprises me, I know it will throw the readers for a loop!
ReplyDeleteI've totally had times like that and I definitely think writing it out is the answer, even if you don't use it. Perhaps when you are to the point of sharing with a few readers you should give one the original story and one the surprise and see what their feed back is.
ReplyDeleteIf it adds drama and intrigue - keep it. If it adds frustration or confusion - toss it out.
