Wannabe Writers #16

Wannabe Writers is a writing group for the un-published and anyone is welcome to join. It's a place where future authors can ask questions, share stories, and get feedback. Click (here) to find more about how it works.

Where I am in the writing process: Getting back into writing again after a long lapse. Am just over the 60k mark in my novel that I hope to be right around 90k.

My current problems: This week I'm more in love with the idea of writing than with the actual act itself. I made a character inspiration board, downloaded new software, am thinking a lot, but not writing a lot!

My question this week:  How to start a story.  I've never been very good a writing hooks.  Any suggestions?  How did you start your story?  (Dialogue, description, action, etc.)

I have a hard time with this as well. I couldn't tell you all the times that I walked away from a story because I just couldn't get that first sentence out. I'll sit down to type, and what comes out is rubbish. Instead of just trying to write through it, I'll give up in a huff.

When I do get past that initial "ughhh, this sucks" phase, I find that I usually will write some sort of descriptive introductory phrases, be it paragraph or page, to set the tone of the story before I get into the dialogue. When I'm reading, I like to know a bit about who is talking and where they are before we get into the action, but that's just me.

  1. I agree beginnings are so hard! You want just the right sentence to start off with.

My post is up now! :)

  2. Hah ha I know about that being in love with writing but not actually getting any writing done. lately I have been too much into writing blogs, learning lots of great stuff, but not actually using it by writing! I finally got over the "hump" and got back into writing last night. This is my first time in WannaBe writers. I thought it might help me with my motivation.

  3. I understand completely about being in love with the idea of writing and not writing. I end up thinking more than writing. Right now is one of those times. It is hard to start a story and finding that perfect sentence can be elusive.

    My post is up now.

  4. I so feel the same way about writing! Love the idea, but have a hard time getting started!

I like how you said you like to know a bit about the person before you start with the action. Good advice!

  5. I feel you on the thinking and planning over the actual writing. Happens to me too often.

I like your idea about getting to know a bit of character/setting before getting into the action. My problem would tend to be the 'how' part of that. I can go from overly descriptive to word-sparse in a paragraph.

(congrats on the cool blog name, btw!)

Join the club! I think we all go through this phase. The key is just sitting down. Most of the time, we fall in love with writing all over again!

  8. Thanks to everyone for the great comments this week!

@Madeleine: I hope so. I'm kind out of love with my story at the moment, I hope we'll reconnect this week!

  9. I have the same problem. I fall in love with a plot, start writing it and eventually find that it loses some of its passion for me and vice versa. I have a new idea that I could really fall in love with but will I be able to outlast the blahs that eventually set in too soon? I hope you fall in love with your story again very soon!
