What are Your Reading Habits?

Once upon a time, I read only one book at a time. Sometimes two. One fiction book that I'd take with me to read while I was commuting and perhaps a non-fiction book of interest to keep on my nightstand. Since I started book blogging, that number has increased exponentially. I started off reading two books at a time, and occasionally three books. Once I got my Nook, that number doubled. Now it's the norm for me to read four books at a time, and sometimes even five or six. That's one of the benefits of an e-reader, I love being able to switch back and forth between books so easily.

My mother has kept a book journal for years, and routinely reads at least one hundred books a year. I used to make fun of her for reading six or seven books at once. She has her upstairs books, her downstairs books, and her bedside books. Now I find that I really am my mother's daughter. I've finished nine books so far in January, so it looks like I might be on tap to keep up with Mom this year! I don't have a set number that I finish a week. Some weeks I may not finish any, while this week so far I've finished three books.

How many books do you read at once? How many do you usually finish a week? Do you set reading goals for yourself?

  1. Wow, nine books already! I had to return quite a few to the library because I couldn't renew them anymore and knew that I wouldn't be able to read them :(
I usually read two at a time, not including school texts. I can't set a reading goal for myself because it'll take the fun out of reading for me. But I'm doing a challenge this year (Aussie YA) if that counts... :)

  2. I prefer to read 1 book at a time. But sometimes if I'm not getting into a book I will put it down, read something else, and then come back to it. I've read 18 books so far this year so that's like...5ish a week I think.

  3. Wow, you can read five or six books at a time?! That is impressive! I am a one-book-at-a-time kind of gal. I think I would get to confused hopping back and forth between books, but honestly have never tried it. I have read 8 books so far this year and my goal is 150 - I might have to start reading mulitple books at a time just to hit my goal haha!

  4. @ brave chickens: I understand how goals can bebe a drag! Challenges are great fun. I'm doing two this year.

@ Jacinda: Wow, 18 books! Very impressed! :D

@ Tara: I tend to focus on one book primarily, but don't let a book sit for too long. If it's sitting, I relegate it back to the shelf and try it again later when it can hold my attention. Good luck on reaching your goal! :)

  5. I like to read only one book at a time. But if I'm at abook store, I pick up something that I don't have yet and start reading.... even if it means I might not get this book right now.

But I've started an internship lately reading manuscripts and submissions... which are essentially books so right now I'm in a middle of 2 or 3 which I don't like at all. One at a time please!!!

  6. I read one-at-a-time, pretty much no exceptions. Sure, I may glance at another book, or perhaps put one down to read another instead, but I'd say, unless I'm reading something for a book-club where it's a chapter-by-chapter discussion, I'm only sticking my nose in one book. My brain just can't handle much else! Of course, I really need to get my nose into those books more often... Sigh!
