What's Your Writing Schedule?

At the end of last year, I decided that it was time to amp up my writing schedule. In 2010, I wrote/revised for about two hours a day. Some days I'd work longer, other days less, but that was about the average. That may not sound like much, but I write/revise pretty quickly and have my system pretty down pat. I can usually get two chapters written in that time, or three revised, as I already have detailed notes in place.

But now that I have three projects ongoing, two more to research and at least one more book to write this year, I figured it was time for a change. So I decided to write/revise/research at least three and a half hours a day, five days a week.

So far it's working well for me, and I'm feeling a lot more productive this year already!  To avoid burn-out, I'm scheduling myself a three-day weekend every month where I take a Friday off from writing and get caught up on my reading.

What's your writing schedule? Do you have a set number of pages/words to hit in a session, or is your goal time spent writing?

  1. My weekdays are hectic, so all of my writing is done on weekends. My goal this year is to spend 6-8 hours over the course of the weekend on "writing work" - writing my novel, working on my lit agency internship, or blogging (and that means actual post-writing, not reading books for review or replying to comments). So far the plan is working really well for me, and I've spent more time writing my novel this month than I did in the last two, and I think the quality is much better as well!

  2. I'm so jealous that I'm green with envy at your writing schedule. Between homeschooling my son and my teaching job, I barely get 2 hours a night to write. But I devote the entire day on Saturday to writing, so that's usually 12-15 hours. That seems like a lot, but they're some of the most enjoyable hours of my week. And I did get my first book written that way, so it's worked so far. I just find that so often during the day when I'm at work that I'd rather be home writing. LOL Oh well, such is the life of the single mom.

    Have a great one!

  3. I seriously need to get on the mark this year. There have been a lot of personal distractions. However, I have to think authors have lives outside of their books, yet they still find the time to produce more. So yeah, I need to step up my game. (Hugs)Indigo

  4. @ Angela: congrats! It's so wonderful to set a productivity schedule and to stick to it. I also feel more productive this month than I had in many previous months!

@ Selena: my writing schedule won't remain like this forever, so I'm trying to take advantage of it. I'd also rather be writing than out there doing things, so you're not alone. Congrats on accomplishing so much on top of being a single mom! I doubt I'd be that productive!

@ Indigo: I agree, I sometimes struggle with having a life outside of my writing. I do spend a lot of time writing and reading, sometimes it's nice to interact with the people that live outside of my head. :p
