Love is all you need...or is it? Penny's about to find out in this wonderful debut.
Penny is sick of boys and sick of dating. So she vows - no more. It's a personal choice...and, of course, soon everyone wants to know about it. And a few other girls are inspired. A movement is born; The Lonely Hearts Club (named after the band from Sgt. Pepper). Penny is suddenly known for her nondating ways...which is too bad, because there's this certain boy she can't help but like..

I've been a Beatles fan for as long as I can remember. My parents were teenagers when The Beatles invaded America, and I grew up listening to them, and pulling their albums from their sleeves staring at the photos. I walked down the aisle to "All You Need is Love", read seven hundred page John Lennon biographies for fun, and I've even named a cat after a Beatles song.
So, yeah, maybe I'm biased, but I adored this book. I loved all The Beatles references, but more than that, I'm so glad that this book exists, for the powerful 'girl power!' themes. I can say that I've never been a girl that has placed boys in front of my girlfriends, but I've been on the receiving end of that situation a few times and it's never fun.
When Penny's jerk of a boyfriend cheats on her, she starts The Lonely Hearts Club and when it takes off and girls from her school start joining to commiserate and support each other, I wished that there were clubs like this in every high school, or heck, forget high school, adults need that support too!
Penny has her issues with boys, but with a 'little help from her friends' she's able to work through them. The Lonely Hearts Club is a super quick read that will leave you wanting to listen to Beatles songs for hours.

This book looks interesting-- how come I've never heard about it before!? I adore the Beatles too! Definitely going to check it out:)
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw the cover, I suddenly remember Beatles. How I love them. Do they really talk about that band in this book?
ReplyDeleteI loved her Prom and Prejudice book. As a middle school teacher I've recommended it to a half a dozen students. I will check this one out now that I've heard it's a good one. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHow cute! I loved Prom and Prejudice...I'll have to give this one a go sometime. :) Great review!
