I fully admit that I have spent many hours on Twitter that could have been spent writing. I check Twitter on my computer, on my phone, up until a couple months ago, I was always on. Then a few things happened in my personal life that kept me from checking quite as often, and I found that it was kind of liberating to step away.
I've always had an "Internet problem". I worried that if I wasn't connected I could miss something. I've found a lot of great things on Twitter, links to amazing websites I would have never found otherwise, new people to follow and just general cool things. But I went away for a week and I found that I didn't miss it. I still check Twitter daily, but now I get to the point where if I have 600+ tweets to read, I'll just close out of the website instead of looking at every single tweet. I no longer feel the need to click every link posted. Thankfully I'm not really into Facebook like I once was, and only log on a couple times a week to see how my IRL friends and family are doing.
I guess I've cured myself of my social media addiction...for now, anyway.
Does social media hinder your writing?

It only hinders my writing if I'm trying to avoid something, like editing. Otherwise, I find I can do without Fb and twitter without having withdrawal symptoms. :) I agree, it's good to step away sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had your willpower! :)
ReplyDeleteI am the same way! And it gets to the point where I feel like I HAVE to check every single tweet, like it's some kind of important task. Which is stupid, because that means the tasks that are actually important don't get done. I really need to learn to cut back!
ReplyDeleteStephanie-it is hard to cut back, and it's taken me a long time to get to the point where I don't check Twitter constantly. I do miss some updates, but it's not the end of the world. :)
