I've never been a big Oprah fan. I've never disliked her, but for me, Oprah is the lady that was on the TV when I was a child in the 80's. She was the co-host of "People are Talking" in Baltimore, before she became internationally famous. I watched her show periodically, but it's only been within the last year or so that I've listened a little closer to her message. If you're familiar with Oprah's dogma, she talks a lot about "living your best life" and such things. It's a great message, but eh, never really for me.
Last night, I happened to catch an episode of her "Life Class" show on OWN, and the topic was the title of this post, and man, it stopped me in my tracks. It could be that I'm getting older and more in-touch with my "higher self" than I used to be, but I really think that this topic is applicable to those of us that are trying to achieve a big goal in our lives, like becoming a published writer.
She talks a lot about visualizing good things happening, and how you really have to believe in order for them to happen. She also showed a clip of an interview she did with Jim Carey, and how he visualized himself becoming famous. He added that you can't just visualize and go eat a sandwich. You've gotta work. She also show a clip from her interview with J.K. Rowling who had a similar message. She believed that she had to get Harry Potter published, and knew that it wouldn't be easy, but she had that belief, so it's what kept her going.
I was also touched by something else Jim Carey said. He said he knew everything that he wanted was out there, he just didn't have access to it yet, so he visualized it. Of course Jim Carey is an exceptional case, and not many of us will have the success he, J.K or Oprah have had, but I think you can take a page from their books and apply to your own life.
If you're a writer, or even just someone trying to accomplish a certain goal in your life, I think you should check this episode out. OWN is re-playing the Life Class episodes each day at 4:00 PM EST, and this episode will be shown again later today.
Do you think that we become what we believe? Do you visualize success?
